Pirates of the Carribean - On Stranger Tides (SPOILERS)

We've just got back from the cinema today, after watching the newest Pirates of the Caribbean. In the famous words of Ronald Weasley 'That was Bloody Brilliant.'

And for those of you like ourselves that are huge Johnny Depp fans, don't even bother reading this, just go watch it! You know you'll love it anyway, even if it's just for the eye-candy! (New eye-candy for you in this one too.)

Melon: I absolutely loved this film! Everything about it was enjoyable from start to finish... I was told by others who have seen it before me that I shouldn't get my hopes up about it, but it was better than the second and third films (which I thought were amazing anyway), so naturally my expectations were high and I am happy to say I wasn't disappointed. I thought it might be a little strange watching it without Elizabeth and Will in this one, but it wasn't that bad as the new characters were amazing and suited the storyline perfectly. One new character in particular was rather nice to look at called Philip, I think it was the long hair, the muscles and the romantic storyline. For any guys reading, there is more than enough eye-candy for you too, what with Penelope Cruz as one of the main characters and the large amount of mermaids. Barbossa and Gibbs were as cool as ever, and the newest pirate SCRUM is a great edition to the story. I would say that the only thing that was upsetting for me really was no more Pintell (Hello Poppet) and Ragetti (The one with the wooden eye)... But if I remember correctly they were on Davey Jones Ship/Will Turner's?... Great watch, would recommend to everyone :)

Atori: The first Pirates film without Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom, but with double Deepness and a new hunk Sam Claflin, it didn't disappoint. The story is centred around the fountain of youth, and each character has a different goal. It opens with one of Jacks many great escapes along with Gibbs. There's a new love interest, this time for Jack with Angelica - Penelope Cruz. A new bad ass in the name of Blackbeard and an added love interest between Philip and the mermaid Syrena. Great action, romance and some good twists. I missed Jack the monkey, though he did make an appearance. A must see film, even without some of the well-loved characters from the last three films, the new cast has made up for it. So watch it already :]

Footnote: For those of you like me (Melon) who like the special features on the DVDs, you'll realise that Johnny Depp has added more to the character of Captain Jack. Like the shin bone that appeared on his head scarf in the third film. He has now got new markings on his face, under his right eye is a small cross and on his chin is a burn/brand mark.
Please watch the film right up until after the credits as there is once again a hidden scene :)

Prayers For Bobby (SPOILERS)

Today we watched Prayers for Bobby, It was the second time Atori watched it and persuaded me to do the same. I think it's worth a watch if your not shallow minded :)

Atori: I've seen this film twice now, and I still find it informative and uplifting. Based on a true story, it's about a young boy, Bobby Griffith coming out to his family in the 1980's. For the first 45 minutes, my views of the mother were negative. She was very religious and ignorant. At those times, I guess, it was a lot more difficult for people to accept gay people. I think it's because the subject wasn't as talked about and people knew nothing of it. Half way through the film, it starts getting more emotional when Bobby commits suicide. As the family cope with the loss, Bobby's mother seeks guidance from a Methodist church wanting to put herself at ease that Bobby has gone to heaven. Towards the end, the mother's views change and she comes to realise that Bobby was `born different at birth`, that he didn't choose to be gay. The acting, at times wasn't too great but the story makes you think and it moved me.

Melon: This was the first time I've seen this film, and I actually really enjoyed it, at first it was really frustrating to watch because the opinions of people in the film about gay relations. For example 'all gays should be lined up and shot,' URGH! some people just piss me off. This whole story was centered around the Bible and religious values, and the prejudices within it about gay relations. What I liked about this film was the fact that it showed two sides to every argument. I liked the fact that the Reverend helped the Mother to understand a better way of thinking and to help her have a less ignorant outlook. It was really frustrating right up until the last 25 minutes, when Mary started to understand that she needed to change. I thought the speech at the end was very moving and very eye-opening for anyone who doesn't understand the 'gay way of life.' GO PFLAG MOMS! I loved how informative the film is, I think everyone who isn't as accepting of gays as I am should seriously watch this film. It might just open your eyes a little bit more.

Insidious (SPOILERS)

So we went to watch Insidious last week on Tuesday 10th May (I know it was a Tuesday, because it was cheap Tuesday at the cinema, OH YEAH! And not an Orange Wednesday).

Melon: I thought it was a pretty good film to be honest. It was very jumpy (those are the best type of 'scary' films). I thought the storyline was good, up until the last say 45 minutes, when the whole 'red demon' thing started happening... mainly because the Demon looked like Darth Maul after he's had a few too many to drink crossed with Edward Scissorhands. The other 'ghosts' were more believable especially the freaky child who enjoyed 'tip-toe through the tulips' - which is now one of the freakiest songs I have ever heard. (Especially when your Mother gets it stuck in her head and sings it as she walks along the landing back and forth from her room to the bathroom) Scary Times! The four freaky smilers at the bottom of the staircase were a close second as well... Overall I think it was worth a watch and definitely better than Paranormal Activity which was the first film I have ever wanted to walk out of...

Atori: Okay, so... I wasn't too sure on the film. The whole plot, overall, was good. But I must have been one of the only ones in the cinema who didn't jump - nothing makes me jump in scary movies, mainly because I'm always expecting it. Unless it's the snake Nagini when that flung out on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Prt. 1, that time my heart went. Anyway, back to Insidious... I spent most of the film trying not to laugh at the lad within a group of guys in front of us, who was jumping every five minutes. Other than the scariness and jumpiness thing, which could be just me because I'm not one to pull a cushion over my face, (Melon: Cheeky bugger) I did like the storyline. Astral-projection is one of those things that interests me [yep, I do believe people can do that stuff, and Melon does too] I agree with Melon on:

The demon thing just made me laugh. The ending too, I was disappointed with, though it does give a good opening for a sequel.

RATINGS:

Melon: I'd give it a 8/10 for scary jumpiness and for the last 45 minutes of plot 4/10

Atori: I'd give it 3/10 for scary jumpiness and for the overall plot 5/10
